Barry Wolfryd nunca supo ser un turista y mejor se convirtió en natural. Oriundo de East L.A., se saltó la barda en sentido contrario a tantos migrantes que como salmones, remontan hacia el norte contracorriente en pos de una esperanza o un recuerdo. No se trata tampoco de descalificarlo como salmón, entre todo el insigne cardumen que se ha venido de este lado a lo largo de tantos años que al igual que él, exótico de por sí, exótico sin remedio. Su vocación pictórica resuma en su saturación, se desborda del lienzo, transpira en la colección minuciosa de motivos, signos y personajes. Hace catálogo de la vida misma desde la improvisación que supone la obra en proceso, todo cabe, toda acaba por caber: la rebaba del pop, la ilustración callejera en aerosol, la heráldica tatuada de los narcotraficantes, la artesanía transfigurada. El imaginario visual que rescata queda dispuesto de tal modo que se convierte en líneas que tientan hacia un campo de tensiones compositivo más allá de su tendido figurativo. Tal vez por eso ha saltado del color al blanco y negro, en la tentación de que las tramas sobrepuestas, como ruido, se conviertan en tema por encima de sus motivos visuales, que como convidados de piedra, transan con una inocencia perdida. Un naïf reinventado que, en su representación, se sostiene en los tensos hilos de lo abstracto.

IN THE FREEZER Meeting <2.2> Temporary Contemporary Snow Gallery January 15-25, 2009

January 9, 2009 -- The Conference Room Gallery will be co-hosting the construction of an exhibition space built entirely out of snow called the Temporary Contemporary Snow Gallery. This will be the first time any attempt to construct a gallery out this particular molecular state rather than completely solid ice. The goal is to create negative space out of the positive using the physical snow that is abundant within the Utah area during the winter months. Keeping within the spirit of the Sundance Film Festival, The Conference Room Gallery feels that exhibiting the works in such a way allows for a deeper interpretation as to how art relates to nature as well as its underlying process. Having such cutting-edge works displayed within the snow juxtaposes the idea of a spontaneously built environment while adapting to nontraditional architecture and materials. Unlike an art fair setting where curated galleries obtain a pre-set amount of space and thus are confined to constraints or working within the allotted size, using snow enables flexibility and opportunity for changing the surroundings while retaining the integrity of the structure for this conceptual art project. Entire hotels, bars, and cafes have been constructed out of ice but never has a contemporary art gallery displayed works within the context of snow. The Conference Room Gallery, will be featuring artists’ works that are sustainable within these conditions and are constructed or created site-specific for the intent of exhibiting their work within such an unusual environment. This temporary installation will become the most provocative collaboration between landscape and traditional artworks, challenging the norms of the current art world. Meeting <2.2> “In the Freezer” at the Temporary Contemporary Snow Gallery will be pushing the boundaries of the idea of a gallery as form of literal white cube. New Art Painted on Recycled Billboards to be Seen 40 Million Times in the New Year

LOS ANGELES— Peter Schulberg, founder of the non-profit Eco-
LogicalART Gallery (www.eco-logicalart.org) continues to aim sky
high in his determination to think outside the public art box. With
“ReVisions”, his recycled billboard art event slated for Los Angeles
and San Francisco, Schulberg’s “drive-by” art exhibit will be seen
over 40 million times in the New Year. The gallery and “street”
premiere of ReVisions will be on January 12, 2008 at 6pm.
The ambitious project, made possible with a grant from the Vinyl
Institute, and in association with display heavyweights Van Wagner
and CBS Outdoor, features 15 original art billboards that will go on
exhibit across the city of Los Angeles. Using actual data it is
estimated the works will be seen 750,000 thousand times by
daily—making it one of the largest public art events in LA history.
In the first hour more Angelino’s will experience the art than attend
any of the major LA art museums in a week.
While ReVisons opens in mid-January the “renewable imagery” art project kicks off informally on weekends starting December 1st when the public will be invited to the Eco-LA gallery to watch a dozen renowned, cutting edge artists painting an eclectic array of images “live” on the 14 by 48 foot billboards.
